One report instead of five terminal commands
The lookup answers the questions that actually come up when diagnosing a domain: where does it point (A, AAAA, CNAME), who handles its mail (MX), who controls its DNS (NS), what has it declared to the world (TXT), and, from the registry itself, when it was born, when it expires and through which registrar. Records are queried live against the public DNS, not from a cache, so what you see is what resolvers see right now.
Reading the signals
Name servers reveal infrastructure choices instantly: entries at cloudflare.com mean the site sits behind Cloudflare and its visible IPs are edge nodes; registrar-branded name servers on a business site suggest nobody ever moved DNS off defaults. Mail routed to Google or Microsoft shows up in MX at a glance. A CNAME at the www host pointing to a builder domain tells you exactly which platform the site really lives on, which pairs nicely with our platform detector.
Dead domains and due diligence
Because registration data comes from RDAP rather than the site itself, the tool works on domains that no longer resolve, which makes it useful in two situations we see weekly: checking whether an expired domain you want to recover is worth pursuing (registered? parked? dropped?), and vetting a domain before purchase, where a long unbroken registration history is worth paying for and a freshly re-registered “aged” domain is not the asset it claims to be.
Frequently asked questions
What is RDAP and why not classic WHOIS?
RDAP is the structured successor to WHOIS, served by the same registries but as machine-readable JSON over HTTPS. It gives consistent registration, expiry and registrar data for most modern TLDs. Some country-code domains (.de, .ru and others) run restricted registries, so age data may be unavailable for them; the DNS records still resolve normally.
Why does domain age matter?
Mostly for trust decisions, not rankings: Google has repeatedly said age itself is not a meaningful ranking factor. But a "company since 2005" whose domain was registered eight months ago is a red flag when vetting a vendor, and an expiry date a few weeks away on your own domain is an emergency worth catching.
The domain does not resolve. What can the records tell me?
If A and AAAA queries return nothing, the site is unreachable, but the RDAP block still shows whether the domain is registered, when it expires and who holds it. Registered but not resolving usually means broken name servers; unregistered means it dropped and its history lives only in web archives.
What should I look for in TXT records?
TXT is where domains declare email policy (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and service verifications. Missing SPF/DMARC on a business domain means its email is easy to spoof; a pile of stale verification tokens hints at years of accumulated services nobody cleaned up.
