Clone a Website vs Build From Scratch: An Honest Comparison
“Should we just copy the old site or finally do it properly?” Every business asks this at some point, after a platform outgrows them, a rebrand, or an inherited website disaster. Having delivered hundreds of both projects, here is the comparison without the sales pitch.
The numbers side by side
| Cloning / rebuild | From scratch | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost (business site) | $400-900 | $2,000-8,000 |
| Timeline | 5-10 days | 4-10 weeks |
| Design risk | None, design is proven | Real, new designs are hypotheses |
| Decision load on you | Minimal | Dozens of approvals and revisions |
| SEO continuity | Full (same URLs/content) | Managed risk, needs a migration plan |
| Differentiation | Unchanged | Opportunity to reposition |
When cloning is simply correct
- The design already works. Conversion data beats redesign opinions. If the page sells, keep the page, change the infrastructure underneath it (that is the service).
- You are escaping a platform, not a design. Leaving Wix because of costs and speed is an infrastructure decision; do not bundle a risky redesign into it.
- Recovery scenarios. Lost site, departed developer: get the working site back first, redesign later from a position of stability.
- Scaling a proven template. Location pages, franchise sites, campaign variants.
- Budget reality. A $500 rebuild this month beats a $5,000 redesign “next quarter” that stays unbudgeted for two years.
When from-scratch earns its price
- The current design measurably fails. High bounce, weak conversion, dated look losing deals, cloning failure preserves failure.
- Repositioning. New market, new pricing tier, new brand: the site must communicate something the old one cannot.
- Functional requirements changed. A brochure site becoming a marketplace is not a cloning project.
- Differentiation is strategic. When competitors share your template stock look, custom design is marketing spend, not vanity.
The hybrid most clients actually choose
Clone the structure, refresh the skin. Keep the proven layout and conversion flow; update typography, colors, imagery and copy during the rebuild. It costs 20-40% above a pure clone, a fraction of from-scratch, and de-risks both paths: proven bones, current look. Rebranding-while-cloning is such a common request that we quote it as a standard option.
A decision checklist
- Does the current site convert acceptably? Yes → clone. No → scratch.
- Is the pain platform/cost/speed rather than design? Yes → clone.
- Did the business or offer fundamentally change? Yes → scratch.
- Is the budget under $1,000 or timeline under two weeks? Clone now, redesign when justified.
Undecided? Send the site over and say “clone or scratch?”, we will give you a straight recommendation, including “go elsewhere, you need a design studio” when that is the truth.
